JUST GIVE DAGGA A TRY

 Sir,

I am happy that government is giving the issue of legalising dagga for medicinal purposes a thought. When it comes to working on reviving the economy, it is important to try and explore every sector or opportunity that is available.

Let us try and see if it can help us. I have heard many emaSwati decry that legalizing dagga will make it loose its value but I beg to differ. What needs to be understood is that allowing a few investors to grow it for medicinal purposes will be properly monitored and it will not be just anybody who will be granted the all important licence.

It is just like opening a hospital, a licence for that cannot be granted to just anyone. Instead, hundreds of people can apply and the government, through a Board that is mandated, will sit down and scrutinize those applications and then award such a licence to the deserving candidate.

What also needs to be considered is the fact that once it has been made legal to grow it for medicinal purposes, government will work on punitive measures to be used against those who would be found growing it without having followed the right procedures, so everything will be properly controlled.
Furthermore, we have seen in other countries that a lot of products, including those that have to do with health, are made of dagga so why can’t we give it a try?

Licence

I have heard of reports that government has a proposal that the provisional licence would be around E1 million and I must say I support it fully.
The person who will be granted the licence will obviously make a lot of money. Right now there are people who are making a lot of money yet they grow dagga illegally, so we cannot then complain about the E1 million.

To the nation, let us not discredit ideas for economic recovery without trying them. In life it is better to try and fail than to not bother trying at all. All the countries that achieved First World status had to try different approaches.

They did away with those that proved difficult to do and went on with those that were possible. That is the root that we must take. I am pleading with our government to approve the proposal for the provisional licence and do so quickly, so that the country can start getting into action. It is time to put this kingdom on the map.
