HOW TO SURVIVE ECONOMIC CRISIS

Sir,

Thank you for allowing me space in your newspaper to share a few ideas with my fellow citizens. The Kingdom of Eswatini is travelling toward the First World status, as per the declaration of Vision 2022 made by His Majesty King Mswati III. I am witnessing a great deal of change in the country.

This includes the construction of the Royal Science BioTechnology Park, International Convention Centre, five star hotel and the highway from King Mswati International Airport, and such things should be commended because it is a sign that the country is on the right track in terms of development.

However, my greatest concern is on the issue of economic fall and high rates of unemployment.
This is disappointing because everyday government encourages innovation. My main concern is that you encourage innovation but fail to grab the opportunity that is available in the mining industry. How on earth can you ignore such a rich industry? How can you ignore the most perfect path to wealth and financial stability?

Why can’t the government explore and implement strategies that will contain our minerals in the country to be sold out as end products?
Where is industrialisation? Why is it a struggle to open up our own diamond shine and jewellery factories to employ the thousands of emaSwati who are lying idle at home with no jobs?

Strategies

I am asking these questions because right now, our economy is so bad and there is a need to come up with strategies that will help boost it. Secondly, we have been mining coal for years now. Why can’t we use the coal to install new electricity power stations and generate our own electricity to cater for our needs as a small country?
These are some of the fields we need to explore instead of losing the billions in enriching the neighbouring countries. Many people will get jobs and this will go a long way in reviving the country’s economy.

Wages Act

The country is in crisis, we want to generate money yet we sit on our brains. Silence! From now on in Parliament stir up the Wages Act, here is the tip: increase wages to salaries for industrial, textile and construction workers by a portion of a meaningful percentage and then introduce VAT for all goods. I can guarantee you if these tips can be taken seriously and implemented as soon as possible, then this sinking ship can be saved. The economy will rise again.
