I WEEP FOR ESWATINI

Sir,

Some people revel in ostentation and lavishness without spending some thought for the many Lazaruses in our midst. They carry themselves as if they have the power of life and death. Some day they will be asked questions about their stewardship on earth. How will that day be? Nobody in the country can speak about tomorrow. Tomorrow belongs to the realm of guesswork. I really weep for my country, which was so good you could never have dreamt of leaving it. Drive through the cities of the country and what you see will shock you. Poverty is the greatest enemy of an average Eswatini family.

Our universities have turned into glorified secondary schools. Our hospitals have turned into prescription centres. Why are we made to live such lowly lives? From the east, west, south and north the story is the same. Nowhere is safe. Nowhere is immune from poverty. Everybody is like in a rat race - struggling as if there is no tomorrow. I have looked at my generation and we seem to have lost focus. We have in our mist people who are well into corruption and this has eaten up the very foundation of our nation. What I see baffles me.

Baffles

It baffles me because people living in poverty have been forgotten. I weep for the country, which, in spite of its global fame, abundant resources and mighty men and women of valor, is still trying to find itself. We are told about the great exploits of our founding fathers who laid their lives so that the country would survive. We read about their courage in the face of adversities and how they patriotically defended the sovereignty of Eswatini with their blood. Their feat leaves many of us in disbelief. But what is being done to emulate them? The much that has been done for this nation is to pillage and steal its resources. Individuals conspire to loot the treasury, connive with others to sabotage it. This is how they love Eswatini. How do we come out of this quagmire to rescue our endangered society and protect the next generation? Nobody seems to be moving the country’s status away from underdevelopment, unemployment, poverty and insecurity. The go slow mentality of most people, characterized by greed, selfishness and mediocrity, is the problem.
