PARENTS, GOVT TO BLAME

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

In almost all communities, there are concerns regarding the behavior of young people.

Parents are heard complaining left right and centre that the youth instead of focusing on education waste time drinking alcohol and taking drugs.
During our days, it was taboo for young people to be caught taking drugs but nowadays it is like it is part of the fashion culture.
They smoke and share dagga as if it was sweets.

But what is the use of complaining when we as parents failed to teach our children good values and how to behave properly?

Parents

Some parents, instead of putting in some effort to curb bad behaviour among young people just watch and say that it was prophesied in the Bible that such acts would occur during the last days.
There is nothing wrong with making reference to Bible verses but as a parent at least you should be seen to be doing something because in the end these young people are the future of this country.

Teaching

I believe that parents are partly to blame because they do not do enough in terms of teaching children the right values or disciplining them whenever they discover that they are taking drugs and drinking alcohol.
It is not just the parents that are to blame but government as well because of its failure to provide opportunities to develop the youth.
So many young people out there spend most of their time smoking drugs and drinking alcohol because they find themselves with nothing to do.
There are no employment opportunities and not enough funds for them to start businesses.

In today’s world the only children with a bright future are those whose parents hold high positions and search good salaries.
Those children will hardly focus on alcohol and drugs because their parents not only pay for them to get the best education but further assist them in getting jobs or starting businesses.

To both government and parents, let the habit of accusing the youth of being a lost generation come to an end, instead let there be strategies to ensure that young people are properly groomed and opportunities are availed for them to develop themselves.

Develop

If young people are able to develop themselves, the end result would be the country realising its goals including attaining First World Status.
So to both parents and government, the ball is in your court!
