FRAME GOALS IN POSITIVE WAY

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

What is it that annoys a certain group of people when we say we want to lose weight; we want to quit smoking and drinking?
Why do people get irked when we share our goals; that this year we are getting married, we want to further our studies, and many other goals that will improve our lives?

It is pretty perceptible that people appear irritable when we share our goals because New Year resolutions are what we set in January only to be abandoned in February.

They feel we make resolutions just to fit in rather than setting something that we will stick to.
The critics have a point but what if they are busy critiquing and rubbishing people’s attempts to set goals that will work this time regardless of the fact that they’ve been made year after year? A new year brings fresh ambition and optimism that maybe this time around our resolutions will come to fruition. I subscribe to the inspiration of setting goals and I thought maybe I should share one or two tips on how to carry your resolutions beyond February.

The most important thing is to frame your goals in a more positive way. The art is to focus more on what you want to bring into your life rather than paying attention on what you want to avoid.

The likelihood of setting positive goals is that they trigger approach and reward motivation. If you want to lose weight, for instance, don’t say ‘I don’t want to be fat’. Saying this will give you zero motivation to draw on when you find yourself munching on junk food. Instead, focus on other benefits of hitting the gym.

Another thing you can do is to always prepare your mind for failure since in much what we plan and ought to achieve failure is inevitable. Preparing for failure means that you always have a contingency plan on how you get over those roadblocks and obstacles while you carry on your goal.

I will use the gym example again: when you miss gym because of a busy work schedule, do not shove your goal of getting fit right away.
Do not find yourself in that space of self-criticism and guilt that you can’t train anymore. When that detour occurs, constantly remind yourself why your goal matters to you. Train your mind and you might find yourself getting all your goals through to December.
