GOVT IS NOT DOING ENOUGH

Sir,

I am one of those who appreciate the decision that was taken a few years ago to introduce the Free Primary Education in schools.
It was a good initiative especially since it is a fact that we have hundreds of families who are struggling to make ends meet which leads to young boys and girls not being afforded the opportunity to be educated.

Yes, parents have been struggling for years. However, I am concerned with the manner in which government carries on with such initiatives because it is like the FPE was introduced without considering a lot of things.
Head teachers have had a headache with the money not being released on time.

At the same time, there have been concerns that there was an apparent difference as the pupils who are accommodated by the FPE are mostly those who go to the schools in the rural areas and the quality of the education there is questionable.

What then has our government done to ensure that the education offered in the rural schools is not different to that offered in the schools in the towns? Remember, we are promoting access to education for all but we must also make sure that there is no rural-urban divide.
Another issue that I have is that for now we have only the FPE, what is government doing to ensure that all the pupils eventually go to secondary and high school?

I say this because it does not make sense to spend resources in primary for pupils who will then sit at home after they have completed Standard Five. Really what is the use?
We cannot run away from the fact that there has been high numbers of pupils enrolling in primary because of the free education and then the numbers become less in secondary as parents cannot afford the fees.

We also have the problem of the girls who fall pregnant and in the end do not complete school which means that the money that has already been spent by government has gone to waste. It is such things that I feel need government to act on and do so soon enough.

Very soon the government will be expected to introduce an education policy for the next five years and it is important that it implements it not for the sake of doing so but to ensure that in the end it benefits the education sector and addresses the challenges that I have outlined above.
For now I have to say that government is not doing enough.
