DEAR MEN, NO MEANS NO!

Sir,

I write this letter with a broken heart following the many stories I read in your reputable newspaper about rape cases in the country. Firstly, I am one of those people who believe that a woman has the right to do what they want at their own time including wearing what they want and feel comfortable in.

I believe that it is not an excuse to force yourself on a woman just because she is dressed in a matter that you deem not proper. Who are you to judge?
I get even angrier when the increasing incidents of rape happen to children. What is it that an old man sees in a young girl that makes him want to sleep with her?

If you follow most of the cases properly you will see that the girls also face the torture of having to face these rapists in courts where they to take the stand and try their best to prove that they did not say yes and this means that we are far from dealing with this type of crime.

Our country needs to tighten the existing laws so that the victims can be encouraged to report cases anytime and not be discouraged.
I am not saying that the courts or those responsible for the laws are not playing the role or doing enough but there is more that they can do.
It is my belief that if more people are charged because they feel there are more chances of a conviction as a result of the laws being tightened the ripple effect is that less rape will take place.

Recently there was a story that was published by this same newspaper to the effect that a young girl was raped at Somhlolo Stadium and you wonder where this country is going to. I thought the stadium was where people go to watch their favourite teams and not this.
Our country is known to be a peaceful one but what is happening nowadays leaves a lot to be desired because the signs are there that our women and girls are no longer safe.

To other men out there, please let us all be responsible and respect a woman whenever she says no because she means just that. Just look at her and think of your own girl child and how you would feel if someone was to take advantage of her and rape her. Obviously you would not be happy so why do it?
