REMOVAL OF SODV CLAUSES SHOCKING

The comments that are coming out of Parliament on the above, with the intended removal of the four clauses, are a sure way of making the country a laughing stock of the world and do a grave injustice to the face of culture that the country is renowned for world over.

Has no one told politicians that the ILO Committee on the Application of Standards and Recommendations, in its 2016 report on Swaziland, although coming from a different angle than this one, indicated that it was looking forward to receiving a copy on the Act once it is finally passed.
There is no doubt that once it receives an Act that does not provide the safeguards that the Bill sought to protect before its mutilation, the country will be the talk of the international community.
This time there will not be the usual targets that government usually blames. Worse still this time is that the country is in the governing body of the ILO.

One trusts that we will not have a situation where the country is viewed as a violator as it sits in the governing body and consider other violators; that would be embarrassing.
If the country wishes to enjoy the limelight such positioning gives it, then it must appreciate that there will be no hiding from the spotlight.
We trust that people will not be misled by outspoken traditionalists who are ignorant of the expectations on the country as these people are not there to ward off the international onslaught that is sure to follow.
One would hope that it will not take threats of sanctions from any quarter to encourage the country to act in a manner that is cognisant of its human rights obligations, in the same way as we saw in the AGOA case.
May we have commonsense reign than doing as we please because this is not only short-sighted but also against national interest.
