EX-MPS MUST GIVE US A BREAK

I couldn’t control my very short temper when I read in last week’s Times SUNDAY paper about some former MPs who openly said they were willing to go for another term in Parliament if voted for.
I asked myself a number of questions which came into my mind and one of them being: “Kantsi kuka Logoba yini, kondliwa ingulube yinye”.

Really what is happening here? Who said these ex-MPs are intelligent? Who said they are the best in their constituencies? Are there no other capable candidates? Are they trying to tell their electorates that they are the best?
It is now evident to everyone how these guys are so greedy and self-centred. They use their stomachs to think and not their brains. Yes, I fully agree that Swaziland politics suck. Once appointed or elected into some office of authority then one assumes that he is the best. Forget it! There are better people outside politics who can move the country forward.

Ask yourself as to what these erstwhile MPs did for the country during their tenure in office? Literally nothing. I am not talking about cheap coffin donations and chicken portions for bereaved families. That’s not politics but donations. Swazis must now come of age and know who to vote for. This counrty is coming to 50 years of independence but still,  we have a generation of Swazis who vote for a person because he assists on school fees and donates for funerals and probably sponsors rural soccer tournaments. Then we think that’s the right candidate.

Here we need people who will use their minds when voting. We need people who will vote for a proper legislator not a community developer. That is the reason we are struggling in this country because of such MPs. The only thing they think about is raising their salaries, they never think about the suffering majority outside. Ask yourself as to what did they ever achieve during their office tenure, nothing except creating gravy trips to solicit allowances to spend with whoever. I know there were those who really understood what was expected from them as legislators, but the majority was all in the dark.

There is nothing good I can write about the ex-MPs. We have draconian laws in place, we have starving Swazis, we have unemployed graduates, we have a shrinking economy but nothing that the legislators assisted us with. I beg to differ with anybody who says that these useless people must go back to Parliament. I was impressed by one MP, Petros Mavimbela, who questioned a very sensitive issue. That MP deserves a chance in Parliament because he understood what being an MP is all about.

I cannot forget that some of these MPs have pending cases even today. What kind of Legislature has a criminal case and is expected to make proper laws?  So my appeal to all Swazis who will be going to the polls next year is not to vote back the ex-MPs because they totally failed the country. Swazis should be very careful; never to vote these guys back to Parliament.  Akusiko ka Logoba lapha!
