THE BOOK OF LIFE

Sir,

The Bible speaks of a book in heaven that lists the names of all the people who will inherit eternal life. This book is referred to as the book of life or the Lamb’s book of life.

To have one’s name written in this book means that one is considered righteous before God and will inherit eternal life provided he or she remains faithful to the end (Rev 3:5).

To have one’s name blotted out of this book signifies a fate of eternal death (Rev 3:5; 20:15).
The first mention of this book is when Moses offered to have his name erased from it (Exodus 32:31-32). God replied; “Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot him out of my book,” (verse 33). This makes it clear that a person’s name can be removed from the book of life. Prophet Daniel, while being given a vision of ‘a time of trouble’ at the end of the age, was told: “At that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book [of life],” (Daniel 12:1).

Jesus told His disciples to ‘rejoice because their names are written in heaven’ (Luke 10:20). Apostle Paul wrote a letter citing the names of a few faithful brethren alive at that time ‘whose names were written in the book of life’ (Philippians 4:3).
Rev. 13 v.8 indicates that people who will worship the beast are ‘all those whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world’.

Apostle John was also given a vision even farther into the future of ‘the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God’ (Revelation 21:10). It was revealed to John that “there shall by no means enter it [the holy city] anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life,” (verse 27). It is therefore essential that one has his or her name written in this book.

At the end of the book of Revelation, a warning stands as a guard defending God’s truth. “For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the book of life,” (Revelation 22:18-19).
Not everyone has his or her name written in the Lamb’s book of life.

A person’s name is written in the Lamb’s book of life only because of his or her own choice. Jesus Christ offers us eternal life if we receive Him, if we invite Him into our hearts.

If we heed His call and ask Him to come in as Lord and Savior, He enters our lives and our names are recorded in the Lamb’s book of life, from which it can never be blotted. Is your name written in the Lamb’s book of life? If not, may I urge you to invite Jesus Christ into your life right now and let Him write it there.
