PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL ORDERLIES HAVE NO WORK

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

One wants to know why the hospital management is wasting so much money paying salaries of these orderlies who do not want to work in the wards. Some Psychiatric Hospital orderlies have refused to work in the wards like other orderlies in other hospitals, clinics and health centers.

They say they want a new job description and a higher grade. Why are they demanding to be paid better than other orderlies in other health facilities yet they do not want to work? Why is government not giving them their exit packages and employ people who need jobs? For what good reason should they be paid at a higher grade?

Nurses in the country are paid in the same grade, whether they are working at TB, Psychiatric or general hospitals. They do have qualifications and specialties but are paid on Grade C. Why then are they demanding to have a separate job description? It is clear that they do not want to work and are refusing to take orders from the management.

They go to work when they desire and break or leave work at any time convenient to them. You find them sitting on benches doing nothing and become aggressive to everyone who talks to them. Really government is paying them for doing nothing.
The problem they have is that they do not understand what is written in their job descriptions and management has done its part by explaining the job description to them individually.

The duties they have assumed now are for cleaners and not for orderlies. Orderlies are supposed to work as a team with the nurses in helping patients. But what we see now is the orderlies having assumed the duties of cleaners, of which they are now overpaid since cleaners are paid on another grade, which is not the same as orderlies.

Recommendations;
1.  The orderlies who do not want to work as per their job descriptions should be redeployed to the posts of cleaners.
2. The Ministry of Health should report them to the Ministry of Public Service for tarnishing the mental hospital orderlies’ posts and further pay them their dues.
3. These people should be charged with insubordination and they need to be called to order.
4. New orderlies should be employed to assist in the wards as there is shortage.
