LET THE GAMES BEGIN: ‘YAMI NAWE’ FEVER

Sir,

“When two elephants fight it is the grass that suffers,” goes a tired English adage. The King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium artificial turf will be the one that suffers the most as giants Moneni Pirates and Manzini Sundowns battle it out for the only available spot in the SwaziTelecom Charity Cup play-offs which is obviously expected to bring the small town of Nhlangano to a standstill.

For the two teams’ set of players there could be nothing as wonderful as playing in the four-team one day tournament, hence their journey go via the playoffs , which makes this game very interesting. When taking into account the fact that both teams boast of experienced and talented players who are capable of treating the supporters with top shelf football, it suffice to deduce that this game is going to produce fireworks all in the name of charity.

The football game aside, I would be doing injustice if I do not applaud the giant telecommunication company SPTC for choosing football to achieve the initiative of helping the needy through the charity cup, which has been part of local football for the past 15 years. Through the charity cup, which also includes community projects and road shows, many destitute families out there have been able to see a better life. Much in line with the tournament’s slogan ‘Yami Nawe’, this nation has been unified by this initiative, which undoubtedly deserves continued support from all stakeholders.

As all roads lead to Shiselweni on the Sunday, one cannot cease to encourage the nation to be part of this event; not only in the football perspective but also to achieve the main objective of the tournament - which is charity. As the football teams battle it out for honours in the field of play; we must bear in mind that charity must be the winner in the end. And of course, that is why I appeal to all the stakeholders to demonstrate fair play in every aspect of the tournament and make the SPTC initiative a success. Let the games begin.

Comfort Jele
