HOW HISTORY HAS BEEN EDITED

Sir,

African school-going children these days are taught about the history of Africa, beginning with the arrival of European explorers up to the present day.

The pre-European history of Africa does not seem to feature in modern schools, even though it is now accessible via technology.
History, however, goes back thousands of years before the arrival of the European explorers. Most of this history is unknown to many people.

Many people in Africa believe that slavery and colonialism began with those European settlers who colonised Africa.
They are, perhaps, not aware that the Arabs had been trading with slaves from Africa long before the Europeans.

They might also not be aware that before Europeans began colonising the world, there were countries in Europe such as Spain, Portugal and Italy, which were under North African colonial domination.
In fact, the aboriginal tribes of Australia and Papua New Guinea are said to be descendants of ancient African explorers who are said to have colonised those lands thousands of years before Europeans.
The Siddis of India are also thought to be descendants of Bantu explorers from Africa.

Many people also wrongly think that Christianity is a European religion, which was imposed on colonised people, when it was, in fact, a religion that originated in Israel with Jesus Christ and the spread around the world, including to Europe.

The East African country of Ethiopia was a Christian country long before countries like Germany, Spain or England even existed.
In fact, Ethiopia is thought to be the very first Christian country ever.

When Muslims attempted to conquer Ethiopia during the Adal wars, Emperor Galawdewos requested assistance from the King of Portugal, who readily sent troops to help defeat them.
To this day, Ethiopia remains a predominantly Christian country, even though Christians now face persecution there, just as they do in many countries around the world.
History is not only fascinating but it is also an important tool for people to gain a better understanding of the world around them.
