SWAZILAND IN NEED OF DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE

Sir,

The Kingdom of Swaziland is one of the few countries that have identified herself with the African Charter on Elections and Democratic Governance, which means that next year in 2018 we are expected to hold free and fair elections.

This will depend on the present legislators or politicians if they passed the Political Parties Bill that is sitting in front of them.
It is not enough for us to identify ourselves with the African Charter and later on break the rules that it stipulates.

It is very important to ensure democratic governance so that the people can have confidence in our system. As you all know, next year we will be hosting double celebrations, including the Diamond Jubilee and you cannot expect the people to fully enjoy such celebrations if they are not happy with the way they are governed.

How do you expect Swazis to celebrate when there are still laws that prohibit freedom when it comes to political activities? The political parties must contest for power so that all citizens could feel appreciated and represented. That is what democratic governance is all about.

So to the legislators, we are relying on you to assist us in ensuring that all democratic structures at your disposal are improved, so that the next elections could make sense and satisfy everyone.
As Swazis, we can help other countries solve their own political problems but the truth is that charity begins at home.

It is good to mediate in issues of other countries and bring peace, but we must also welcome other countries when they advise us on how to improve in or own country when it comes to the promotion of democracy.

PS, Luyengo
