TRAFFIC COPS HAVE TURNED SERVICE INTO A CASH COW

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

It looks like the traffic police have turned their services into a cash cow. It seems like they are now using their power to generate money while we expect them to assist us on the roads, ensuring safety.

I will not say much about how and when they should conduct roadblocks but there are some traffic officers who just park along the freeway and stop cars without any signage available to hint a roadblock. These officers stop kombis to get cash from them.

We applaud the police that they are strict on the issue of drink-driving but lately this has also turned into a cash-generating activity. They try by all means to get as much offenders as they can like they have a target to achieve.

And most of the time the officers would have been drinking on the course of the day. They now hunt for offenders i.e. they follow a car at random then connect the siren to scare you and stop you, check if you have been drinking. The way they intimidate drivers just shows that they are aiming to reach a certain figure to attain from this offence.

There are a few questions I may just need clarity from the RSP;
When and where should a roadblock be conducted?
Do the commissioners check officers if they are in a good state of sobriety?

Do the officers assigned to roadblocks have any experience on vehicles and their activities? i.e. tyre condition, wind screen lighting, engine etc. which parts are to be taken as an offence.
The breathalyzer is a calibrated device, thus it needs to be serviced. Are they serviced and at what intervals? Do they have this information on record? If so who is the authorised/accredited company responsible for servicing such equipment?

We would like to have some clarity on these issues as we are the people paying the fines.

Concerned driver

NOTE: This letter was forwarded to the police service, twice, to afford them the right to reply but unfortunately they have not responded.
