PRIORITISE TECHNICAL SUBJECTS IN SCHOOLS

Sir,

It is another year and as a citizen of this country I am looking forward to a good year where the lives of citizens will improve and that we witness development in every sector including economic and academic.

\
Having said the above, I appeal to His Majesty’s Government to take note of some important aspects that I believe are the only path to achieving the development goals that our country has.

There is no shadow of doubt that technology and technical skill subjects need to be made number one priority in our education system, in fact I am inclined to suggest that they must be made compulsory at secondary school level.
One subject where the government has invested millions and millions of Emalangeni is Design and Technology, but unfortunately pupils’ numbers are dwindling in this subject.

Personally, I believe that D&T is one of the critical and crucial subjects that need to be seriously promoted in our education system.
Not long ago our local newspapers carried an article of a young graduate teacher of Design and Technology from Swaziland College of Technology who designed a car for disabled people.

This shows that our education system is capable of producing world class designers in technology and further proves that D&T is one major subject that could propel this country to greater heights if properly promoted and marketed.
For a long time, government has been criticised for failure to ensure the provision of well qualified teachers in local schools, especially in the rural areas.

It also feels as though the Design and Technology teachers are marginalised group of teachers.
This scenario needs to be viewed carefully, in order for this programme to successfully educate the Swazi child, teachers need to be well qualified as per the pronouncement of the King..

The University of Swaziland has been approached on several occasions about introducing D&T degree programmes but up until now nothing tangible has come out of the negotiations which have been on-going for several years.
One would therefore, appeal to universities such as Lomkokwing University to seriously consider introducing degree programmes in Design and Technology.
