GOVT DOESN’T HAVE DESIRE FOR REFORMS

Sir,

We keep hearing the same bad news regarding our financial state as a country. The problem though is that we don’t seem to be plugging the holes through which the funds keep licking. Government does not seem to have the desire to push for reforms.

For instance, do we need to continue sending delegations out of the country as if things are normal? Also, government puts all its eggs in one basket, which makes it difficult to account for these monies. I heard from someone the other day that there was an announcement on radio that there was no diesel for government tractors.

My question is, how can that be when farmers are asked to pay upfront before the tractors come and plough for them? What happened to those funds? My mother is owed tractor hours from last season and she has already paid for more hours this season. Now tell me, is she supposed to go and pay again to hire a private tractor? I’m sure government needs no reminder about the fact that farmers never got to harvest anything last year, despite having ploughed and lost a lot of money in inputs. Now we hear that government will prioritise civil servants’ salaries, with whose money?

Let’s not kid ourselves here by robbing Peter to pay Paul. Let’s get our house in order before it’s too late. The farmers are not asking government for some freebies but they want what is rightfully theirs. They are also the ones feeding the citizens of this country at their own expense. As much as government wants it’s taxes, it must also give the farmers what belongs to them. Of course we know that the salaries are prioritised because both Parliament and Cabinet are beneficiaries. Let’s stop thinking about our stomachs only but also the stomachs of the struggling farmers. Need I say more?
