The prostate is a small gland found in  men. It is the size of a walnut and surrounds the first part of the tube urethra which carries urine from the bladder to the penis. This gland produces semen, a thick white fluid which mixes with sperms produced by the testes.

It also produces a protein called prostate specific antigen that turns the semen into a liquid. The gland is surrounded by a sheet of muscle and a fibrous capsule.

The growth of prostate cells and the way the prostate gland works is dependent on the male sex hormone, testosterone which is produced in the testicles. The rectum (back passage) is close to the rear part of the prostate gland.
Signs you may have a
prostate problem

*    Frequent urge to urinate
*    Weak flow, especially at night
*    Burning urine, poor circulation
*   Blood in urine
*    Impotence - weakness of entire reproductive system
*   Lower back pain, weak muscles
*   Development of gall stones and gravel due to uric acid collecting in the bladder.

Causes of prostate cancer

Although the causes are unknown, there are some factors that are known to increase a man’s chances of developing the disease.
Genetic – men who have close relatives who have or have had cancer of the prostate are said to be slightly more likely to develop it.
If several women in the family have had breast cancer, this could indicate that an inherited faulty gene is present in the family. The gene may increase the risk of the men in the family getting prostate cancer.

Diet principles

A diet high in animal fat including dairy products and low in fresh fruits and vegetables may increase your risk of prostate cancer. A high intake of calcium such as dairy foods may also increase you risk.
*   Eating and drinking foods and medication that damage the prostate.
*    Constipation due to overeating.
*    Lack of fibre puts pressure on the prostate tubes, causing the prostate to become enlarged and slow the flow of urine and sperm. It prevents the bladder from emptying completely, leaving stagnant urine in the bladder.
*    Lack of exercise, driving and sitting too much.
*   Tight fitting garments.
*   Lasting sexual stimulants.
It is advisable that one must eat at least two ripe tomatoes daily as they contain a substance called lycopene that can lower blood levels of a substance called IGF1. This is a protein that may stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells.
There is also some evidence that taking selenium supplements in the diet may help to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
