CELEBRATING MASTERS OF MULTI-TASKING

In just 24 hours, we will be celebrating Mother’s Day. A special day for not only mothers but also women who are guardians of children.

With all the stories we read about conflicts in families, like last week’s front-page Swazi News story of a mother pouring boiling water on her reportedly abusive son, it is a time to also appreciate the good mothers.

It is therefore not a surprise that Mother’s Day is celebrated before Father’s Day. The role of a mother in any person’s life is too important to put into words. They are treasures.

In terms of life managers there cannot be a better manager than a mother. You give them a house and they turn it into a home. You give them groceries and they prepare meals.

magicians

They are magicians. I read somewhere that the word mom is an acronym for Master of Multitasking. I agree. And they are excellent at it.
In an ideal world words like single mums or baby mama would not exist. In an ideal world, if a person commits to have a baby with anyone they must take full responsibility of that baby and marry the bearer of the baby.

Hence even in our culture there is a provision that allows for one to pay a fine if you impregnate a lady without having married her.
It recognises the importance of a child being born in a family with both parents being married. Of course this being in an ideal setting.
The number of child maintenance cases is heart-breaking. And in most cases it involves a woman struggling to get money from the father of the child to pay for his or her upkeep.

responsibility

A father in some instances in gainful employment. An abdication of a very important responsibility by irresponsible men. I personally cannot break bread with anyone who walks away from raising a child they fathered.

Sadly in our society it happens daily. I once heard a heartbreaking story of how a man once resigned from work just to avoid being garnisheed to pay monthly maintenance of a child.

This led the woman, unemployed, to sell fruits and try and raise the child on her own.

gainful

With all the problems facing the country, one we do not need is a fragmented family or children raised poorly yet both parents are in gainful employment.
Already the statistics of orphans and vulnerable children is tear-jerking. So much so that having a parent is now almost like an honour than a norm.
The children that disrespect their mothers do not know how much other children wish to be in their shoes to have a real-life earth angel in their midst, teaching, guiding and protecting them.

Anyways today’s feature is to honour these amazing women. In the late 90s one of my most favourite groups Boyz II Men released ‘A Song For Mama’.
I do not know what ever happened to these guys. They were coming up alright.

I had almost every CD they would produce. In this new age I would say I had every MP3. Perhaps they went from Boyz II Men to Grandpas. Just kidding.

Well this song is an emotional ode to mothers everywhere and to everything they do for their children. As Boyz II Men’s last hit of the 90s, it served as a heartwarming end of a great run.
It was the theme song for the 1997 film Soul Food, which depicts how much power a mother can have in holding her family together.

force

Just to take you down memory lane, and for 2000s to introduce you to the song, part of the first verse went something like, “You taught me everything and everything you have given me I will always keep it inside, you are the driving force in my life. There isn’t anything or anyone that I could be, and it just wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t have you by my side.”

The crooners go on to thank their mums for always being there to ‘love and care for me, when skies were grey’.
The next part goes, “Whenever I was down, you were always there to comfort me. And no one else can be. What you have been to me you will always be, you will always be the girl in my life for all times.” Drops Idols microphone.

The song is just an encouragement to mothers who also feel unappreciated that they actually are loved and cherished.
I know there are many who do not share or appreciate this day because they may have lost their loved ones, but to them I say may you cherish their magnificent memories and all they instilled in you to be what or who you are to date no matter how long or short you may have been with them but they did play a role in your upbringing. May their lessons inspire you to also be a great parent.

This feature is a tribute to only all the good mums. Because in reality there are mothers who due to external factors have equally abdicated their responsibilities, for being a loving influence in the lives of their children.

separation

Some are even symbols of division between the children and the father because they are bitter at the way separation happened.
May this day also bring about a spirit of forgiveness and bring back that motherly attribute you were born with and unite the children with their fathers no matter how terrible they may have been to you.

At the end of the day if both parents are still alive it is inexcusable that the child cannot get to spend time with either.
There is no amount of gifts one can shower a good mother to show how much you care.

But at least this feature is a gift from me to all our mothers, to say on your behalf ‘mums, you are appreciated’.
As Tu Pac put it; “There’s no way I can pay you back, but my plan
is to show you that I understand: you are appreciated.” Happy Mother’s Day Eswatini.
