A disciplined lifestyle is one of the key factors for a productive new year. One of the most important keys to a successful and effective lifestyle is discipline. All successful people are disciplined people.

Usually people only notice the success of someone without realising that almost 90 per cent of what entails their success is done away from public eye. Top athletes and artists are as good as they are because they spend more time practicing and perfecting their skills before they come to the stage to perform.

Self-discipline is the power that transforms a poor man into a rich man. We won’t be able to achieve great things as individuals, families, communities or nation without practicing the art of discipline. Success is not an accident, it takes time, effort, commitment, energy and consistency. Self-discipline is the force that makes success in any sphere possible. Cultivating self-discipline is the choice we should make and keep on upholding.

Discipline is the commitment to consistently do what is important and necessary to enhance our purpose and vision so as to reach our destiny. C.J Smith says, “Discipline aims at the removal of bad habits and the substitution of good ones, especially those of order, regularity, and obedience.” Success does not usually come in a day; rather it comes daily through our daily habits. Success is actually found in our daily routine or habits. We succeed by being disciplined in doing right things over a period of time.

Habit reflects character, shapes character and affects destiny. When we look closely at our daily habits today, it will give us an idea of how our future will look like. Our future is not a mystery; it can actually be seen in our daily habits in terms of our time, diet, money, relationships, speech and planning. We must be disciplined enough to live our life by design and not by default
We must train ourselves to act in accordance with what we want to see happening in our lives.

Discipline demands that we establish a system of essential rules and duties that we commit to adhere to in order to achieve our objectives in life. Discipline is actually the quality of being well behaved in any given circumstance. It improves the quality of our gift or talents and leads to skilled behavior and performance.

A disciplined lifestyle can be achieved when we first come to that place in life where we discern and know what is important in life. Understanding the times and seasons of life. John Maxwell says, “Self-discipline is where time and priorities meet.” We must get clear about what really matter in life. Once you get to that place of burning to achieve something in life, your habits will change, you will begin to hang around people who fan the fire in you, and your focus on the future will be so intense that you will divorce the unimportant. Your passion will always cause you to prioritize and systematically plan your life.

Usually any lack of self-discipline in our lives is a result of not knowing what is really important to us. What is really important to you?  We must divorce the lifestyle of excuses and be serious about our life. In life never walk by feelings; they are so disruptive to your momentum. Sometimes you must do something right even when you do not feel like it.

A disciplined lifestyle demands that we put away all low value activities. Brian Tracy says, “Successful men and women are those who work almost all the time on high value tasks.” So many things are good, but may not be profitable to us at this particular time or season of our life. Brian Tracy says something very important about cutting out low-value activities.
He says, “If you spend all of your time on highly productive tasks, by the end of the day, you would have ‘crowded out’ all the unproductive activities that might have distracted you from your real work.”
We must practice self-discipline by not allowing distractive activities to steal our time. All successful men and women are time conscious. Self-discipline demands that we be intentionally aware of how we spend our time. We must understand that every minute matters. We must exercise self-control on how we use our time and how we allow others to use up our time. Our days on earth are numbered and our time is so limited, it must be used wisely and profitably. The Psalmist David declares, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Self-discipline will keep you going on in life even when it hurts and people around you do not seem to understand your struggles. Life can get so busy and complicated sometimes, nevertheless always tell yourself, ‘ It’s not over until I finish what I came to do on earth. ‘ You do not need extraordinary intelligence, gifts or talents to fulfill your purpose, just get focused , cultivate your gifts and talents, and develop your discipline capacity.
