YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN UNEP’S 11TH ANNUAL SUBCOMMITTEE MEETING
THE United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) 11th annual subcommittee meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) is a significant event that brings together representatives from member States to discuss and review global environmental policies and programs. This meeting plays a crucial role in shaping the global environmental agenda, ensuring that the efforts of UNEP align with the evolving environmental challenges and priorities of its member states. This year the meeting was set for July 8-12, 2024, in the United Nations Environmental rogramme headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
The CPR serves as the main intergovernmental body of UNEP, composed of representatives from all member States and major group stakeholders. It meets regularly to provide guidance to UNEP’s Executive Director, review the implementation of UNEP’s work programme, and prepare for the biennial sessions of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). The annual subcommittee meetings, such as the 11th one, are an integral part of this process, providing a platform for in-depth discussions on key environmental issues and the strategic direction forward for UNEP.
Shaping Global Environmental Policies
The 11th annual subcommittee meeting focuses on several critical areas, including the implementation of the UNEP Medium-Term Strategy, the progress of flagship programs and the preparation for the next UNEA session which is UNEA 7. It serves as a forum for member States to exchange views on environmental governance, share best practices and coordinate their efforts to address pressing global environmental issues.
The Crucial Role of Youth Participation
The participation of young people in the UNEP annual subcommittee meetings is vital for several reasons. Firstly, young people represent a significant proportion of the global population and currently we are the largest generation of young people in history. Furthermore, we are the ones who will inherit the consequences of today’s environmental decisions. Our involvement ensures that our perspectives and priorities are considered in shaping policies that will affect our future. Youth participation also promotes intergenerational equity, ensuring that the voices of future generations are heard in the decision-making process.
Secondly, we bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a sense of urgency to environmental discussions. We are often at the forefront of grassroots movements, advocating for climate action, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Our engagement in international forums can inspire and drive more ambitious and inclusive environmental policies.
One significant example that involves meaningful youth participation is the advocacy efforts of Vanessa Nakate from Uganda. Her activism and participation in international forums such as the COPs have helped elevate the visibility of African perspectives and contributed to shaping more inclusive and ambitious climate policies that prioritise the needs of African nations and communities.By participating, young people can hold decision-makers accountable and push for the implementation of sustainable practices that align with the vision for a healthier planet.
Empowering Young emaSwati for Global Impact
For young emaSwati, participation in the UNEP 11th annual subcommittee meeting is particularly important. Eswatini, like many other countries, faces significant environmental challenges, including deforestation, water scarcity, and the impacts of climate change. The involvement of young emaSwati in global environmental discussions ensures that the specific concerns and needs of our country are addressed. It provides us with an opportunity to highlight the unique environmental issues facing Eswatini and to advocate for support and collaboration from the international community.
Moreover, participating in such high-level meetings can empower young emaSwati by enhancing our knowledge, skills, and networks. It would expose us to global best practices, innovative solutions done by other member States and successful case studies that can be adopted and implemented in our own communities. It also provides a platform for us to showcase our own initiatives and achievements in climate action, gaining recognition and support from international stakeholders. Youth participation in the UNEP subcommittee meetings also contributes to capacity building and leadership development for the young people of Eswatini.
Young emaSwati who engage in these forums can acquire valuable experience in diplomacy, negotiation and advocacy, which can benefit their personal and professional growth.
Through this we can actually create a generation of emaSwati who are leading experts in the environmental field and give Eswatini a good name on the global stage. They can become effective environmental leaders and champions. In conclusion, the UNEP 11th annual subcommittee meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives is a crucial event for shaping global environmental policies and programmes.
