MBABANE – The ‘Put a ring on it campaign’ finally came to an end after eight shows hosted around the country’s tertiary institutions.

The last edition of the show started at Limkokwing University and ended at the Kwaluseni campus on Friday.
The theme ‘Put a ring on it’ encourages young people to wait for marriage before having sex or at least use a condom if they fail to wait.

Some of the lessons taught at the shows by peer educators included how to use a condom. The students were also taught to always check if there is no airspace inside the condom while some were randomly picked to do practicals of the lessons in front of the audience.

Entertained

The programme director, hip hop star PsychoLution, kept the audience entertained as he sometimes introduced his lyrics much to the amusement of the crowd.
As has been the case since the start of the campaign, there were performances by different artists.
These included Kena who was the crowd favourite, J-King, C2K and Mozaik.

The artists had to compose a song for each show with the subject being condom usage. Judges were there on each show to award the best composed song on the day. Mozaik and Kena got a tie in points much against the expectations of the crowd who felt Kena out-did himself.
The campaign’s project co-coordinator; Sihle Shongwe said she was impressed with the overall result of the whole project.
She further thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the show particularly the sponsors.

Manipulated

“We were able to get a lot of contributions from the participants as a whole. Our findings revealed that most of the girls are manipulated by rich men who offer them financial support for sex. So we hope this project has empowered women to resist or at least ‘put a ring on it’ to prevent the spread of diseases and HIV,” she said.

Shongwe also thanked the UNISWA peer educators who ensured that the event was attended by a large crowd after a door-door visitation was conducted to bring everyone who was at the campus.
Vika Nxumalo, one of the project members said he believed that they got the best responses from William Pitcher Training College and Ngwane College.

Demands

Nxumalo thanked the artists who participated from the first show to the last one. He wondered how they were able to cope with the demands of the project as they had to compose a new song for every show.
Kena when interviewed said he was very honoured to be part of the edutainment tour. He added that people should transform the entertainment part of it and learn from the project.

Most of the students who attended said they were very happy to be part of the tour as it benefited them a lot.
They said most of what they learnt was not new but was very important to them in their day to day life.
