Jeremiah's birthday video too sexy for TV
Television viewing these days has just taken a real sleazy turn and it is just shocking what sort of music videos are now allowed onto the screens during daytime.
There is a real need for some monitoring of these channels just like they censor movies and other programmes that may contain scenes of nudity, offensive language or sex scenes. I am not calling for the banning of sexy music videos but rather they need to be monitored especially one I saw recently with the famous once taboo three letter word.
What is in a song really? What is the real meaning of a song and its words? I almost fell off my seat the other day when I saw the title of a music video by one Jeremiah called…wait, hold your breath, ok let me force myself to type this … ‘Birthday sex.’
I know that I may be touching on a sensitive topic here because there are so many fans of this song, I have since learnt, but really what is the message we are putting across to the nation. Never mind that already the girls on the music videos wear barely nothing but now we have to listen to songs with such titles?
The gripe here is that music channels are generally for all ages viewing but what do you do when you find a five year old singing along to a song like ‘Birthday sex?’
How and why this song sneaked its way to the channels is still a shock and my take is that it is too sexy for music channels.
I am over 21 and I can watch, sing along to it and hey maybe even dedicate it to someone but what about the minors that are exposed to it? Who will speak out to them and say that is not right, there is safe sex and unsafe sex.
The debate over the effectiveness of the parental guidance symbols on our screens is as old as time. The symbols are merely guides, they cannot stop any 12-year-old watching a no Under 16 movie as long as they have access to a remote just like they cannot stop a 61-year-old tuning to watch Cartoon Network. But that is not my concern today.
Some guy called Drake also has a bunch of cheer leaders showing off their breasts and wearing hot pants in a song called you are the best. Watching a music video with your partner can be an uncomfortable experience sometimes. I have been accused of only glancing at the screen when there are music videos by Lady Gaga and Rihanna because they barely wear nothing and ignoring it when there is the likes of Enrique Iglesius or any other male.
Whether that observation is right or wrong is for another day. The issue here is that television viewing is getting too sexy and is impacting on society.
The skimpily dressed ladies are creating trends for young people in the country. You jump into a kombi and you find yourself seated with a person wearing just shorts and a skimpy top. While it would normally be shocking nowadays we have been forced to accept it. One wonders where we are going next.
Soon people will also be wearing swimming costumes to town just because Lady Gaga wears it. So what will happen the next time that Birthday sex video is broadcast and there is a whole family seated watching with their five, nine and 12-year-olds?
I think the remote will do the talking for the parent but in actual fact the music channels should be regulating that before it even gets to that stage. They are just too sexy for some tvs.
