Grateful to leave Palesa at work

Refilwe Madumo tells us about the greatest rewards and challenges of being an actress and how her character, Palesa Mooki, on e.tv’s Scandal! has viewers glued to their screens.
How did you prepare for this role?
I did research. I spoke to a lot of people and read a lot. I still do because my character’s life is so dramatic that I constantly have to keep up. It’s important to me that she comes across as a real person, whether you like her or not. I want people to have an opinion about her.
Are you different or similar to your character?
Well, I never have a reason to scream like she does. I like to think I’m saner; that girl has issues. I’m so glad that I leave her at work at the end of the day because she’s exhausting.
What have been the greatest rewards and hardships in your acting career?
Knowing that you’ve touched people is the greatest feeling.
Hardships? D rawing from my deepest, inner most pain to lend to the character is, in itself, a big challenge.
Did you enjoy working with Aubrey Pooas Pastor Lefa, who dies in the show?
I love Aubrey. I loved working with him. His commitment and the depth of emotion he displayed made it easier for me to find my footing.
He had the ability to make me feel very comfortable, whether it was a heavy emotional scene or something a little more sexier. I’m always scared of that stuff.
But he carried me all the way. It always turned out great because we were there together.
Was it difficult to act that scene when you were saying goodbye to Lefa?
Man, it was rough. It was hard for me to even watch it on screen. I was heartbroken and tired every day, which meant I had absolutely no emotion left for my real life. When somebody leaves a set it’s always sad, but this cut me up because he was the guy who had had my back every day for the past two-and-a-half years.
What projects are you looking at getting involved with in the future?
I would love to get involved with some green projects. I don’t think going green is an upper-class lifestyle thing. I think it’s inherent. It could be the cheapest way to live because you are dependent on no one.
Watch ‘Scandal!’ on e.tv at 7.30pm from Monday to Thursday.
