MBABANE – The shortage of theatres in the country is a great concern to the theatre industry.

The Entertainment desk has noted that among the things the industry lack, theatre is on of them as we currently have two theatre houses in Eswatini, which is the Theatre Club in Mbabane and Malandela’s Amphitheatre, which is housed at House On Fire. Some local artists have shared with this publication that the lack of theatre houses locally is a concern to them as they are unable to showcase their talent and embrace growth by using theatres.

Collaborative

According to the Cambridge dictionary, theatre is a collaborative form of performing art that uses live performers, usually actors or actresses, to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The Theatre Club in Mbabane is usually the most used theatre house  by local artists and performers. In  the past week, it successfully hosted the ‘Isintu Festival’, which was aimed at celebrating indigenous music as well as promoting culture, especially among countries such as Botswana, South Africa (SA), Lesotho as well as Eswatini. Regardless of the fact that it hosted such a prestigious event, it is hardly maintained and during an investigation by this publication, some local artists disclosed that this is one of the aspects that dispels them from hosting their events at the venue. Also, a local exhibitioner, whose name is withheld by this publication, shared that the establishment is currently being used extensively by churches for hosting sermons, a handful of artists only show up to use the venue.
