MBABANE - MTN Bushfire gives back to the community, through helping the less privileged children.

MTN Bushfire is an event that happens annually for three days in Malkerns. The event is not only about the entertainment sector or having artists on the stage; but it’s about creating an environment that works collectively to support local economy and the entertainment industry. It’s worth noting that the economy of the country gets close to É50 million from the festival according to a survey done by the University of North West in South Africa. There are approximately 200 000 orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs) in the country. Some of whom stay with their parents, guardians and others with their siblings.

Happy

Nicky Mlangeni from Young Heroes said they were happy with MTN Bushfire coming back. “We are happy with Bushfire coming back since we benefit a lot from it. There are about 200 000 orphaned and vulnerable children,” said Mlangeni. She went on say through this initiative they have managed to support 37 families which have 46 children with cash grants amounting to E110 000, which is then distributed to the value of E400 per month. She went on to say that this year MTN Bushfire has donated 8 000 tickets where E15 for each ticket will go to the orphans. (E15x 8000) tickets amount to E120 000. This was revealed during the Mandela’s Legacy Fund launch held at Malkerns last week Friday.

Lobamba Lomdzala Indvuna Mpiya Fakudze praised the Thorne family for looking out for the children. He stated that it was very rare for someone to look after someone they didn’t know. “May God bless the Thorne family for what they are doing for the orphans in the country? They are willing to give away E120 000 to children they are not related to know,’’ said Fakudze.

Families

He went on to say that they had seen a lot of wealthy families who with poor relatives because they were not looking after them, but the Thorne family felt it was vital to help them. “May God bless you Jiggs and your family and may you continue to do the good work as Lobamba Lomdzala community we are grateful to have you as part of our community,’’ he said.
Jiggs Thorne the Co-founding Festival Director of MTN Bushfire also said they were grateful to be part of those who look after vulnerable children in the country. “There’s so much work that goes in to this and I’m so proud of how we come together to make this happen. It breaks my heart to hear that they are about 200 000 OVCs in the country, I can’t even wrap my head around that they are 200 000 children who don’t have their biological parents. We decided to come together and we are excited to help the children, MTN Bushfire has given out 8 000 tickets where E15 will be going to Young Heroes,’’ he said.
