MBABANE – The Makoti Festival, slated for April 23, 2022, at the Malkerns Country Club, is set to be a showstopper.

Speaking to committee member, Thembinkosi Mthethwa, he revealed that they had finalised the line-up and had confirmed most of the artists. “Our headliner has been confirmed as the award-winning Zahara and she will be ready to thrill at the event,” he said. Other artists confirmed for the first Makoti Festival are South African artists Mzukulu, who is signed to Sjava’s label 1020 Cartel, Gospel sensation Jumbo, local acts Mvelo, Khole, Floewe and Country music musician, Cleopatra Methula, among others that are still to be confirmed. The Makoti Fest is a family oriented event aimed at promoting the Eswatini culture in a fun and inclusive manner, which is why the event will include activities for children among other activities.

Fashion

Food and fashion stalls, live performances and cultural exchange programmes will be the order of the day at the festival and it promises to be a family friendly environment for patrons. The emphasis on the word ‘makoti’ speaks to the event’s goal to empower women through this initiative and to educate younger females on the importance of being a responsible female, while promoting entrepreneurship among women. “The festival is the brainchild of New Life Entertainment, together with the Illa Penboy Foundation, who have seen a glaring gap in the celebration of modern women, in particular married, unmarried and the young girls who aspire to be a proud makoti in the near future. At this event, the whole family will come out to play and network, while also selling wares, dressed in African inspired clothing creating a buzz for lifestyle, fashion, food and music,” reads a statement by the committee.

According to Mthethwa, there will be traditional meals prepared on that day and a cow will be slaughtered on the day before the event. It will be used to prepare a multitude of local dishes and cuisine for the enjoyment of patrons, who will also get to experience vintage Eswatini food. Companies participating in the event are encouraged to bring along members of their staff who belong to lutsango as this is an event aimed at women empowerment. Patrons are urged to bring their families and participate in this culturally rich initiative, which will intrigue foreigners and raise interest in the local youth on issues pertaining to their culture. We expect to see various designs inspired by local patterns and sceneries while enjoying a unique Eswatini experience with the whole family. This will also greatly improve relations in families as they will get a chance to interact with one another, unlike the routine that daily life brings.

Enquire

Companies wishing to book stalls can enquire with Nomabizo Mthethwa, who is in charge of stall rentals, and according to some of the committee members, the purchase of stall spaces might come with a certain number of free tickets. This is, however, going to be confirmed closer to the event date. Tickets to the Makoti Festival are already available at Computicket and general entry tickets will cost E150, VIP E350 and E500 for VVIP tickets. There will also be stalls available for rental, live performances, cultural exchange programmes and a kiddie’s corner to keep the young ones entertained. The festival will be on April 23, 2022, at the Malkerns Country Club and all children below the ages of 13 will be allowed free entry. More information to follow on this publication.
