MBABANE –   “Production is the greatest assessment of time well spent.”

This Sunday Adelaja adage rang true for local self-taught graphic designer Darien Dlamini from Mbabane. Dlamini said he spent 15 minutes designing an artwork for renowned and award-winning South African house music producer and deejay, Prince Kaybee.

Artwork

This was after Prince Kaybee posted on Twitter asking graphic designers to design a new artwork for his yet to be released track featuring Nkosazana and Masuda titled ‘Sbind Uyabulala’ which he will be releasing this coming Friday. The post read “Guys I need your help, I’m dropping a song in four days and I don’t have an artwork. Please respond under this tweet with an artwork of the song. Title of the song “Prince Kaybee ft. Nkosazana and Masuda - Sbindi Uyabulala.”

Designed

Right after seeing this, Dlamini then designed the piece and commented with the artwork, much to the ‘Hosh’ hitmaker’s delight as he then commented by saying, “You are the only guy that took me serious and put an effort, for that I’m gonna triple your fee. I’m not gonna use this because it’s not what I’m looking for, but please inbox your bank details.” Moments later, Prince Kaybee then asked for Dlamini’s banking details as he was amazed by his work, given the time it took him to complete the task.
In an interview with this publication, Dlamini was asked how much he charged the deejay and he said it was for E500. Much to his surprise, Dlamini was sent triple the amount as he received E1 500 from the deejay although he (Kaybee) indicated he would not be using it since it was not what he was looking for.

Self-taught

Dlamini went on to add that he was a self-taught graphic designer who has a Degree in International Relations from the University of Pretoria (UP). “When I saw the song title, I was like I know what I am going to do as I wanted the artwork to be simple, but yet striking and I am glad that I was able to accomplish this just under 15 minutes. “This means a lot to me as this is good for my portfolio and I am hoping I will get more jobs for this going forward,” said Dlamini. Dlamini also highlighted that before he was admitted for International Relations at UP, he had applied to pursue an Architecture course as he has a passion and love for art and for the past three years, he has been designing in his own spare time. As of yesterday, by the time of compiling this report, the tweet had already garnered over 2 300 likes and 108 retweets.

Well-known

He also mentioned that Prince Kaybee was the first well-known figure to pay for his work, but has also worked with other local clients as well. He concluded by asking members of the public to nominate him at this year’s Swazi Boy Social Media Awards under the ‘Best Graphic Designer’ category. This is not the first time a liSwati has designed artwork material for celebrities as renowned graphic designer @ZumaRokaSwazi has also designed for Amapiano artist Lehleeza’s artwork for his latest single ‘Amahleza’, Bekzin Terris and Oscar Mbo to name a few.
