WATERFORD STUDENT FEATURED ON SA RADIO

MBABANE – Fresh from winning a E10 000 cash prize in a competition sponsored by AVBOB, Sibahle Thwala had an interview this week with SA FM.

The 17-year-old Thwala, who is a Form V student at Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa (UWC) was interviewed by well-known host Michelle Constant on the station’s Jet Set Breakfast this past Sunday, May 16, 2021. The poetry competition was sponsored by one of the leading undertaking companies in that country, AVBOB, and Thwala became the eventual winner as he walked away E10 000 richer. During the interview and in the competition, he read his poem which he wrote in siSwati titled ‘ Lilanga’ which was in praise of his mother who is raising six children on her own.

He thanked his school, Waterford Kamhlaba  for giving him the opportunity to attend on  bursary where he will be doing the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme which will eventually permit him to attend university in the United States of America (USA). Constant added that she knew of Waterford Kamhlaba through her friends in that country whose children had attended the college and had said that it was a ‘wonderful and great’ school where students were taught to think independently and creatively  and further encouraged Thwala to participate in community service and other creative activities.

Thwala went on to add that his school was indeed prestigious in that it belonged to the International United World Colleges Organisation where he also made friends from all over the world. The AVBOB competition made him pull out all stops to praise his mother who was the subject of his poem ‘the sunshine of his life’. In a telephonic interview, Thwala conveyed his delight at participating in the competition. “I am excited and greatful to have won the grand prize. I want to study science but I always had an interest  in poetry too. I am glad that I represented my school well in the competition,” he said.
