GO INDEPENDENT OR SIGN RECORD DEAL?
MBABANE - To sign or not sign: That is the question that races thoughts in the minds of many artists, producers and creatives who are in the industry.
The future of the music industry has been the topic of innumerable conversations and opinion pieces over the past year with COVID-19 that has seem to have halted this industry from growing.
Musicians
The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing musicians and music lovers to get creative. How can you socially distance at a concert? How can you perform if the audience has to stay home? These are the questions the industry has to answer if it hopes to survive the global pandemic and while at that, these artists are trying to survive the industry that, may be toxic and one wonders whether it is an advantage to be part of a music stable or be an independent creative.
In the modern music industry, it’s getting easier to release your music and build a music career without the backing of a record label. There seems to be more independent artists than ever before breaking into the mainstream without the support of a label. This is because we have been exposed to online streams, lockdown has presented an opportunity for individuals to do research on how to keep going in their music careers. Though one would ask, is being an independent artist worth it?
Independent
When you’re an independent artist, you get to enjoy the benefits of control over the direction of your music, keep 100 per cent of the profits, 100 per cent ownership of your music, have access to music distribution, marketing, streaming, merchandise creation, and other services. While on the other hand, this may not be as rosy as most people assume it is because many. independent artists don’t have the resources and money a record label can provide, independent artists starting their music careers have a limited network of fans and industry contacts. Whereas record labels would have a larger fan base and connections with music industry professionals such as promoters, booking agents, media, etc. It can also take time and experience to learn all aspects of the music business. There are a lot of roles to manage, changing trends, music laws, and much more.
