MBABANE – The year 2020 is treading on its final milestone as we near the New Year, 2021.

Different organisations and individuals are celebrating huge achievements and milestone, which they have managed to cover in this rather troublesome year, which was struck by a pandemic.

The entertainment and arts sectors were not spared from this as in its entirety, there was a worldwide shutdown, where interactions with people from different parts of cities were prohibited to make public gatherings.

With all of that said, Spotify, a Swedish music streaming and media service provider, which pays royalties based on the number of artist streams as a proportion of total songs streamed by a user rolled out the 2020 music streaming statistics for artists to share with their fans.

As an all too eventful 2020 winds down, the application shared that it was only right for artists to take a moment for reflecting on this extraordinary and challenging year as well as the strides they had made in the midst of it all.

Spotify for Artists last Friday shared on their website that artists and their teams could access their 2020 Artist Wrapped, which is a personalised summary of their year on Spotify that would tell them how their music connected with fans around the world.

“When we talk about 2020 in the years to come, we’ll, of course, tell a story of a pandemic, protests, and politics but it will also be a story of resilience and the persistence of human connection,” they said.

S-Tone, whose real name is Sifiso Magagula, took to his social media pages on the past weekend to share his summary of streams.

He expressed his excitement over the love represented by the numbers on his music.

At the time of going to print he had a total of 150 000 listens from 59 000 users of the media platform.

Streaming music has somewhat replaced the purchasing of CDs as many people migrate on to the online platforms such as Apple Music, Deezer, JOOX and Spotify.

Some artists have shared that tracking their income through this streaming platforms has become easier as users pay subscription fees to access the music.

According to the Spotify website, artists are paid out their royalties on a pro-rata basis, meaning that, at the end of each accounting period, all of its royalty money gets virtually dumped into one pot, from which artists are paid according to their share of all streams on the platform. S-Tone is a musician, who is part of the El World Music headed by KwaZulu Natal born artist, Sun El Musician, whose real name is Sanele Sithole since 2018.

Under the stable he has collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists such as Sun El Musician, Simmy, Azana and Sino Msolo as well as released an album title Mbabane in August this year.

Other artists, who also shared their  streams from the app include Black Coffee, who celebrated over 48.3 million streams from over 7 million listeners, while Sun El Musician celebrated 7 million streams from over 1 million listeners.
