MBABANE - ‘Twenty is still a good number for us.’

This was said by the President of pageants Eswatini Catrien Potgieter, in an interview with the Entertainment Desk yesterday. She officially confirmed that they were left with 20 contestants as they had 40 before the COVID-19 pandemic.  “This is the first of its kind, but we are not complaining about the number as it is manageable. Before the pandemic we had over 40 interested candidates and half pulled out as they were not interested in taking part anymore,” said Potgieter. The president also shared that they would  be hosting the pageant online. The public will choose their favourite contestants by liking their pictures which will be uploaded on the pageant’s Facebook page dubbed ‘Miss Eswatini.’

Innovative

“The current pandemic has prohibited us from gathering hence we decided to use an innovative way of selecting the contestants by allowing the public to choose their favourite. The winner will be determined by the number of likes and reactions from their post on Facebook,” she said.  She went on to explain that they were expecting to get at least 14 contestants for the finale out of the existing 20 contestants.  “The previous crowning had 13 contestants and it was a success. We are also planning on having at least one gathering with the contestants, but we are yet to confirm that,” she added.  It is worth noting that Eswatini is not the first country to host a pageant online, South Africa is also one of the countries conducting their pageant online. “We will soon share with the nation through the publications on when they can start supporting their favorite contestants. We will upload their pictures and biographies,” she said.

Mission

Miss Eswatini’s mission is to empower and provide opportunities for young, diverse, goal driven women who have a desire and passion for public service and charity. “People also need to consider a young girl who is progressively and professionally moving forward in life. We need a person who will be inspirational and be a role model,” said the president. The pageant will carry on withis theme  the previous pageant on going green, which was in line with every other pageant across the world. During the Miss Eswatini pageant launch that was held a few months back, Sigeja Curios was revealed as  one of the main sponsors for the pageant. They will be sponsoring the pageant with cultural outfits which the contestants will be wearing during the culture/ tradition segment of the competition.
