MBABNE – A new broom sweeps clean, but an old broom knows the corners. The adage follows PelePele dance group’s latest developments, as its longstanding founder Larry Mhlanga handed over the reins to a new director.

Speaking to the Entertainment Desk, Mhlanga said he had appointed Paul Maseko as the new Director for Pelepele Dancers.
“As the founding director I am stepping down to allow fresh talent to run the group and bring in new ideas that will grow the brand.
Mhlanga revealed that over the last decade, Pelepele has been the leading performing arts group in Eswatini with a number of international performances to their belt.

Under his guidance, Mhlanga said Paul Maseko had been appointed the new official Director alongside Mncedisi Mweli, who would serve as an Assistant Director.

“These two have been with arts academy from the time when they were still young until today, they have grown,” he highlighted. Mhlanga remarked that the reason he had seen it fit to involve the two was because they understood the vision and mission of the institution very well.

unattended

He mentioned that he would not be leaving them unattended but he would serve as an advisory board director to guide them.
With the change in leadership, Mhlanga appealed to the business community and arts sector to carry on supporting them as the group maintained its ethos regardless of management change.

“I have been grooming Maseko and Mweli for years and they have shown good qualities of leadership skills and their experience with PelePele will come handy,” he added.

He stated that the two were not new in leading the organisation as they also managed projects that PelePele would participate in.
Such projects include the schools programme in which they trained schools on arts and culture.

Mhlanga also highlighted the importance of sharing leadership skills in that there needed to be a succession of roles in order to keep the vision fresh and relevant. PelePele was founded in 2006 and the group became a household name becoming the first and the only independent group in Eswatini to tour Belgium, Spain, France, and Italy, the United States of America, Dubai as well as the African continent extensively.

stewardship

Through the stewardship of Mhlanga, the group mentored lots of talents and also established some programmes. Maseko told the publication that he was excited about his new role and that he could not wait for the coronavirus and lockdown to be eased so that he could carry on from where Mhlanga had left off.  “We are hopeful that the lockdown regulations will ease and we will be able to homour our invitation to dance at Cannes this September,” he said.
He further stated that he was bringing a fresh twist to the group and also hoped to inspire out of school youth to join the academy.
