MBABANE – With almost half of the year having elapsed, MTN SWAMA award winners have been busy with projects despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prestigious MTN SWAMA awards occur yearly around December where Eswatini artists are celebrated and honoured paying homage to their contribution to the growth of the arts industry in the Kingdom of Eswatini.
They are proudly brought to emaSwati by SWAMA (The Eswatini Music Association) and made brighter by MTN Eswatini.
A total of 21 award titles were bagged by different artists in the country at the event that was held at the Royal Swazi Convention Centre on December 7, 2019.

Acknowledged

Dates for the next awards have not been communicated although the Public Relations Officer, Bongani ‘DJ Tizalami’ Dube acknowledged that they were still in talks with their title sponsor which is local large network MTN Eswatini.
SWAMA and the Association for Christian Artists in Eswatini (ACAESWA) collaborated on their biggest project so far this year, which was the formation of an artist’s ensemble that produced a COVID-19 song of hope titled ‘Asibemunye’.

Achievements

Other than that, some of the artists that took awards home have shared with this publication some of their achievements since then.
Best Contemporary, Male Artist of the Year award winner and DJ, Tendaness has proven why he remains an ambassador for Eswatini music in diaspora as he has been breaking charts on international radio stations.
Tendaness’ manager Sibusiso ‘3T’ Simelane revealed to the Entertainment Desk that the song titled Orchestra was featured at number one on DJ Edu DNA Top 5 on BBC 1 Xtra.

Recognised

Meanwhile, the Best Country award winner Cleopatra Methula also took on the international waves with an interview at Nashville as well as being recognised by the CNN African Voices.
They did a documentary with her, talking about the country and her love for country music.
The documentary was aired on Digital Satellite Television DSTV channel 401 on February 9 to 10.

Excellence

“SWAMA is extremely proud of our various local artists who are making waves internationally and regionally, as they are Eswatini’s immediate ambassadors of excellence in the arts.
Furthermore, we laud artists who have ridden the digital wave, especially during this time, and made an impact beyond our borders.
As we always say, the world is, and shall continue to be, our stage. Let more locals own it,” said Dube.
