MBABANE - “We will die of hunger as we are basically unemployed now!”

These words were said by DJs, artists, entertainers and event organisers in an interview with the Entertainment Desk. ‘Sitofa yindlala’ (we will die of hunger) were the exact words they used. They said this in reference to the cancellation, postponement of shows and the shutdown of some of the hotspots where they earn a living. 1D, real name Wandile Dlamini, a hip hop DJ and music producer, said as entertainers, they would die of hunger as they were  current  unemployed, in light of  the closure of hangout spots, “We will not be able to put food on the table,” said Dlamini.

Phinda ‘Master P’ Dlamini, who is also a hip hop DJ, said the new developments in the entertainment industry were bad for everyone. “We have no bookings meaning no money and this means no food. We cannot even say we will be working on other music projects during this time because it requires collaborating which is risky. We will just wait for things to be better,” said the award-winning DJ.

Comedian Ndosh, real name Mfundo Simelane, said they felt retrenched without notice, adding that he was anticipating serious financial woes in the industry. This outcry seems not only to be for locals but internationally booked DJs as well. South Africa’s DJ Tira, Mthokozi Khathi, posted ‘sizofa yindlala yazi’ on his social media accounts. It is worth noting that the ‘Thank You Mr DJ’ hit maker is one of the most booked DJs in the region. Meanwhile, Eswatini pop queen Zoe ‘ZoeGenesis’ Nonde said she felt this was an opportunity for artists to be creative and explore other income streams that were not affected by the cancellations.
