MBABANE – Befitting! This is the perfect term for describing the song that has been crowned as the radio song of the year 2019 – ‘Umnyango’ by the award-winning Popzin.

This transpired last week during the annual Eswatini Top 40 Hits of the Year show, which played on EBIS2, where ‘Umnyango’ clinched the much coveted position one spot ahead of other local, South African, and international songs that had rocked the charts and airwaves throughout the year.
Narrating the song’s impact, chart show presenters Lindelwa ‘Lindz’ Mafa and Bongani ‘DJ Tizalami’ Dube revealed how Popzin had achieved the most weeks at number one on the weekly charts.

Unprecedented

“The song initially spent five consecutive weeks at the top of the weekly charts between February and March, only to return as a re-entry in May to clinch the top spot again for four weeks, a feat that can be safely described as unprecedented in the history of the charts,” they said.
‘Umnyango’ was first released late 2018 as the lead single to Popzin’s album ‘Imphendvulo’, an album which was launched and released in 2019. The album also consists of other hit songs such as ‘Korobela’, ‘Ding Dong’, among others.

It was largely produced by award-winning producer, Mr Kangaroo of Swazi Swagg Records (SSR).
Popzin won two awards at the 3rd MTN SWAMA Awards last month- ‘Newcomer of the Year’ and ‘Best Album’, while Mr Kangaroo won the ‘Best Producer’ award.

Meanwhile, South African top house music producer and spinner, Prince Kaybee missed the top spot by a whisker, as his 2019 hit song ‘Fetch your life’ attained the second position on the annual Top 40 Hits of the Year. The song features the engulfing vocals of Msaki, and is famous for the line “we pray away the pain of not being in alignment with our dreams”.

Prince Kaybee had topped the annual ultimate Top 40 Hits of the Year charts in 2018 with his then hit, ‘Banomoya’, a song that featured Busiswa. Notably, in 2019, Prince Kaybee is the only artist who secure two spots in the Top 10 of the Top 40 charts, as his other hit song ‘Gugulethu’ attained the number 10 position.

A Manzini-based rapper Street Cooper, who collaborated with a Namibian artist called Adora on a song called ‘Feel the vibe’ completed the top three at position three. The song achieved phenomenal success on the airwaves, in spite of it being his debut commercial release.
