MBABANE – Barely two days after former SWAMA President Melusi ‘Zox’ Dlamini has resigned, the association has taken a stance on the matter.
SWAMA is an acronym for Swaziland Arts and Music Association.

Through the Vice President Lindelwa Mafa, the SWAMA National Executive Committee (NEC) said   following Dlamini’s decision to step down from his position as the association’s President due to his envisaged busy schedule in the coming year as an active and competitive player in the arts business sector, they have unanimously accepted his resignation.

“While it came at a time when the industry was in the middle of celebrating the grand success of the third MTN SWAMA Awards held last Saturday, we call upon all artists and our stakeholders not to panic as prior preparations had been put in place.

Intertwined

“We will continue working with Dlamini albeit on different terms, as our paths would be inextricably intertwined,” said Mafa.
Mafa said in the meantime, the SWAMA NEC will duly, and constitutionally, elect and unveil a caretaker President at an emergency general meeting for all members to be held within the next 14 days.

“Once endorsed, the caretaker President will lead the rest of the Executive and the Association until it completes its official term of office in November 2020.”
She further said the NEC wished the former President all the best in his future endeavours, and assured him of its undivided support.
“The industry needs our concerted effort and collective contribution in ensuring that its growth seen recently is sustained,” she said.

Dlamini, the former President to the artists association, resigned on Tuesday morning.
He resigned with immediate effect.

Dlamini came into office in 2017 and his term was supposed to finish year. SWAMA National Executive Committee (NEC) stays in office for three years.
In his statement when resigning, Dlamini said 2020 was a big year for setting the right course for the next decade in order to ensure that our professional lives remain viable.

“I have made a conscious decision to channel all my focus towards personal obligations and as such, I feel I will not be able to continue serving, efficiently, the functions of the President’s office which require from one, a lot of time, intensity and accessibility,” read the statement.
It also read that when he took up this enormous challenge, two years ago; the intent was to re-establish SWAMA, a 40-year-old association as a vibrant and attractive brand – to artists, public and private organisations.

“It is without a doubt that there have been many difficulties, but I am proud of the fact that we have made great progress. To date I am content to say that we have been able to sustain the SWAMA Office for a full two years without artists paying any subscriptions and without receiving any sort of government subvention.”

Strategy

Dlamini said it was time for new leadership, a new strategy and fresh ideas. I would like to express my uppermost appreciation to everyone for the support in helping to make my short-lived term of office a joyful, audacious and successful one.”
He also said he wished his successor all the best and humbly asked artists support his successor the same way which they have afforded him.
In an interview on Tuesday, artists expressed their shock when learning that Dlamini has resigned.
The artists preferred to stay anonymous due to the sensitivity of the matter. They said they wondered what had happened when told that Dlamini had resigned with immediate effect as SWAMA President.
“We did not see this one coming. This is really shocking.
“Working with ‘Zox’ was very easy. I hope whoever comes after him takes over where he left,” said the DJ.
They said during Dlamini’s reign, they learnt a lot ab out the music industry and how to make money out of it. They said their lives had improved because of him and his passion for the industry.
