MBABANE – The hunt for fine artists who would graffiti or colour the Albert Millin pub Winter Walls has been put on hold.

Following a post that was shared last week on their social media pages including Facebook, where keen fine artists were encouraged to participate to graffiti or colour the walls and would be rewarded with some pizza and cold beers, the pub has decided to halt this campaign.

It is worth mentioning that the post by the pub to engage with fine artists and then reward their hard work with refreshments was met with mixed reactions from social media users.
While many encouraged artists to participate others felt the post was mocking the talent of fine artists as they believed it was wrong to reward artists with some pizza and drinks.

Encouraged

This as the pub, through their social media pages, had encouraged the public to spread the word about the campaign.
One Facebook user said exposure seemed better than a pizza reward.

When Contacted, Albert Millin pub’s Barry confirmed that the project had been put on ice at least for two weeks.
He said this was because their sponsor Castle Lite had requested them to put the project on hold.

“We have to discuss with Castle Lite first. Once we get clarity there as we have a contract with them, then we can decide.

Confirmed

‘‘But it will be a few people doing different boards. One for students, one for a beer brand and two for artists, but nothing has been confirmed until June,” he said.
Barry said more details about the project would be shared once the discussions with Castle Lite were done.

Artist Khulekani Msweli thought this was a great initiative for the arts industry.
“Eswatini does not have much professional graffiti art or public art.

‘‘If more establishments avail their wall space for public art, it would be great.

Incentives

‘‘I would then encourage them to have cash incentives as artists need money more than pizza,” he said.
SWAMA President Melusi ‘Zox’ Dlamini asked to be given time to consult with the relevant parties before making a formal comment on the matter.
