MBABANE –  Being a SWAMA member costs nothing! The Swaziland Arts and Music Association (SWAMA) President Melusi ‘Zox’ Dlamini revealed that registration for aspiring SWAMA members would be free until 2020.

This new principle will continue until the term for the current National Executive Committee (NEC) comes to end. Initially, the free registration rule was set for only last year, however, the NEC extended it to 2020, when their three-year term ends.

Dlamini said this decision was motivated by their mandate of empowering upcoming artists. He said some of the artists could not afford the registration fee. In previous years, registration cost E300 and it was set to increase to E400 this year.

“The E400 would have deprived many upcoming artists of becoming part of SWAMA,” said Dlamini.
He said their mandate was to expose and groom Eswatini artists, and not to deprive them of opportunities because of the registration fee which may be hefty to some.

“Instead of using their E400 to register with us, they can use it to make their profile, do photoshoots and engage in any other activities which will boost their music careers,” he said.

The SWAMA NEC has more projects planned to assist unknown artists break into the music entertainment industry and make a living through their talents.

Betterment

The projects include workshops, which will educate on copyrights, patents, trademarks and royalties.
There will also be international cultural exchange programmes, artists’ social welfare, funeral policies and other structures that will be formulated for the betterment of artists.

However, registration has not commenced yet.
The dates for registration will be communicated through the regional SWAMA chairpersons who were appointed a month ago.

The Hhohho Regional Chairperson is radio man Bongani ‘Bobo’ Dlamini, Manzini Regional Chairperson is renowned MC Menziwokuhle Mthethwa, Shiselweni Regional Chairperson is former Miss Eswatini Nozipho Shabangu and Lubombo Region Chairperson is Kool Swazi Entertainment’s Mfundo ‘DJ Mfundo’ Mbhamali.
