MBABANE – Eswatini choral fraternity’s perseverance has worked out for the good. After a dark cloud befell the choral community last year in Eswatini where it was revealed that the renowned Old Mutual National Choral Festival competition was not going to be hosted in the country, a huge U-turn has been made as this competition is coming back to the country.

This was revealed yesterday by impeccable sources and it was confirmed by the Eswatini National Choral Music Association.
The competition is slated for August 4 at Esibayeni Lodge in Matsapha.

The return of the competition was motivated by the high number of Eswatini choirs that participated despite them being moved to South Africa. Six choirs participated in Durban under the KwaZulu-Natal region and two competed in Johannesburg under the Gauteng region.
The sources stated that this commitment made the organising team reconsider bringing the competition back to the country.

Old Mutual Swaziland confirmed this, stating that discussions about the itinerary of the competitions were still ongoing.

Excited

Speaking on behalf of choirs, the Eswatini National Choral Music Association Chairman, Sihle Gumbi, said they were excited to have the Old Mutual NCF competition back in the country.

“The choral music fraternity is very happy with what NCF has done. Actually, we knew that if we go all out to South Africa and make an impact there, they will definitely consider bringing it back home.

“We also hope that choirs will prepare themselves very well for the competition and we plead with companies to support choral music in the country,” said Gumbi.
Last year, Old Mutual, in partnership with their associate Premier National Choir Festival, revealed that there would be no Old Mutual National Choir Festival in the country this year.

Objective

This came after their 2018 strategic objective of being contemporary and relevant to changing trends.
This decision led to Eswatini choirs to compete in South Africa and they were given an option to either register under Gauteng or KwaZulu-Natal regions. The option of registration is in the hands of each choir.
