MBABANE – Afro Soul singer and award winner Zamo was in a celebratory mood this past weekend after winning the Female Celebrity Hair Influencer award.

The ‘Tinyembeti’ hitmaker was nominated at the African Hair awards a few months ago together with South African celebrity stars such as Thuso Mbedu and Selimathunzi’s Khanya, under the Female Celebrity Hair Influencer category. The awards ceremony took place last Friday at Gateway Mall in Durban. Zamo saw her name being included following the popularity of her creative hairstyles.

A number of celebrities and her followers went on to do the very same hairstyles she introduced thus leading her to getting the gong during the posh event which was attended by other big stars in the South African entertainment circle. Zamo is fresh from being crowned Best Soul Artist at the MTN SWAMA Awards, which took place on December 1, at Royal Swazi Spa Convention Centre, Ezulwini.

Natural

“I am very happy about winning the award because when I started the natural hair journey I felt like a lot of people were no longer embracing their natural hair. Women are now focused more on weaves, and I do not have anything against weaves as I also wear them but I felt like as young women we needed to embrace our natural hair,” she said. She added that it had been an amazing moment to see the natural hair and sibhaca hairstyle trend. “It is good to see sibhaca back in fashion because this will now ease the pressure from the girls in the rural areas who cannot afford the weaves. My reason for going back to natural hair was actually deeper than that and I remember when I started this journey with Nobandile Gwebu, it looked playful at first but it grew and I am grateful for that,” she added.

Moreover, being liSwati has made things even better for her as she said it had more weight and people respected her for that. The country’s entertainment gurus took note of her positive progress as she got a heart-warming message from Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC) CEO, Stanley Dlamini. Dlamini said they were proud of ‘Zamo’ and wished her to scoop more awards while spreading her wings in South Africa. The organisers of the awards ceremony have congratulated the winners and further thanked their partners for participating in the 6th Annual African Hair Awards ceremony.
