A DOCTOR IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

Fish Entertainment Founder and CEO  Mbongiseni Msibi, also a medical student known as ‘Fish’ , first hand-crafted a merchandise cap to local Afro Soul sensation Sandziso ‘Sands’ Matsebula, when he landed in the country for his mid-term break from medical school and since then, he has been busy with his internship and trying to grow his entertainment business on the side.

More than a Ukraine-based medical student, he is also a model, breakdancer, musician, actor and humanitarian and after factoring in all of these things, you begin to wonder why someone with a skill set like his even gravitated towards medicine in the first place. After all, statistically the profession has the highest suicide rate in the world and is usually associated with murdering lions, not cool guys in fresh kicks.

“Medicine for me was never something I had planned for, and in all honesty, I hadn’t even considered it until halfway through my gap year. Throughout high school and up until Matric, I had wanted to do so many different things, from architecture to business to marketing to advertising to law, but I never really knew what I actually wanted to do,” Fish said.

He first considered medicine while he was a volunteer in some of the local public hospitals.  Raised to serve humanity, it was while working with underprivileged and old sickly people that he decided to enter into a career where he could literally try and make their health lives better.

make extra cash
On the contrary, owning ‘Fish Entertainment’ has been a blessing for the young multi-talented creative as he said through this, he has been able to make extra cash and also help the youth struggling to get employment.

The young creative said the reason he ventured into clothing was because there was a huge demand for the brand after he made just a few clothing items for himself. People then approached him that he and asked him to also supply them with the same clothes he had under the Fish Entertainment brand.
“It is humbling to see people appreciating your work and actually get to know that they are your followers, to the extent that they wouldn’t mind wearing clothes that are branded with your own name, it is very fascinating that as a nation we support each other’s dreams as this partly helps one to have something to feed on if as a youth we struggle with getting employment,” said Msibi.

He further said, “I wouldn’t call myself a celebrity yet, I think I still have a long way to go for that. Up to now people have shown a lot of love and kindness and I’m very grateful for that.”
His job doesn’t define him though.

While Fish still dabbles in the pursuits that he threw himself into as a lad, acting, music and fashion, it’s his passion for the local entertainment industry  in which he mainly invests himself these days.

But how does the good doctor manage to fit it all in; what’s the secret?
“There are no secrets. I always tell my peers  that if they prioritise service to humanity in whatever aspect of their life, they are seeking to develop, the rest comes naturally and I have no doubt success will be achieved.”

stand out from the crowd
With a better understanding of brands and branding, Fish has realised that just by being himself – cool-guy extra mural activities, famous friends and a distinct style – he’s able to stand out from the crowd.

“Don’t be scared to change your dress code every day. Nobody wants to see the same thing. Neither does someone feel the same every day. I can literally change from doctor to skater to hip-hop head to model to GQ man to farm boy, skhothane in a week. Just enjoy it and forget about the haters.”
That’s a reality of the fame game – there will be haters, especially when doing as much as Fish does in so many different spheres. However, by constantly consulting and studying the Bible, Fish  is able to stay strong when things aren’t working out for him the way he’d want them to.
“Know that you are where you are not by chance but by the design of your creator, for your development and for the development of those around you.” He said.
It’s this quote that Fish turns to when he needs to remind himself of his place and purpose. And it’s these words that Fish lives by, helping those around him in order to fulfil him, and that’s something to smile about.
