MBABANE – It seems as if gospel artist Frans Dlamini is grooming future gospel music stars.

It was first Nduduzo Matse who made headlines after he scooped the Crown Gospel Best of Africa Award 2017. Next was Nothando Hlophe who is currently making waves in and out of the country through the famous song titled ‘Khulula Ugcobo’. Both Nduduzo and Nothando were Dlamini’s backup singers for more than five years. And now, another of Dlamini’s backup singers has gone big. Nondumiso Maseko, famously known as ‘Lala’ when on stage, has since joined one of South Africa’s leading gospel music mass choir, Spirit of Praise. She is the second Liswati artist to join Spirit of Praise after Nothando.

Maseko, who has been backing Dlamini since 2013, is part of the nine singers who qualified to sing in the choir led by South Africa’s gospel star, Benjamin Dube. She managed to make it through after being one of the best soprano singers during the choir’s auditions held last month in Johannesburg. Attending the auditions held at the Baseline Studios were over 600 singers who all wanted to be part of the choir. Maseko got to know about the auditions through a post she got from social media. She then applied and to her surprise, she got a response inviting her to attend auditions that were held on May 28. The auditions were held for two days. During the first day, Maseko managed to make it through to the top 48 singers who qualified for the next round of the auditions.

On the second day of the auditions, Maseko became the best singer in the soprano section resulting to her getting a slot in the choir. Actually joining the choir were three soprano, three alto and three tenor singers. Out of the three soprano singers, she was spotted as the best. The excited singer said she was still in disbelief. “There were over 600 people who attended the auditions. The competition was tight but thank God I made it through,” she said. She added, “There were other singers who were great vocally, when listening to them sing I feared that I was not going to make it. However, I regained my confidence and gave it my all to make it through, “said Maseko. She thanked her family for supporting her saying after she told them that she would participate in the auditions they were praying for her. “I cannot forget my father in the gospel industry Frans Dlamini, for the support he has given me. I am where I am because of him and I owe him my life,” she said.
