FRECKLED-FACE BEAUTY!

They say a face without freckles is like a night without starts! Meet 21 year old Sihle Simelane, a fourth year student at the Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) who has a face full of stars.

With the increase of social media presence in our everyday lives, many people are at liberty to see other humans who may look different or possess peculiar qualities.

A lot of good comes out of such exposure but like a coin, everything has two sides. Negativity, body shaming and bullying are three of the most polarising societal issues facing the youth living in what has been dubbed the ‘Instagram age’.

Overflow

With the constant pressure from society on social media who overflow our timelines with a specific one-sided image of beauty, many teens are left to wonder where they fit in.
Sihle Simelane is a testament that beauty comes in different packages and that there are numerous forms, beauty not just one.

With social media being a ‘dog eat dog world’, it is important for young people to hold their own and avoid relying on external affirmations of their own beauty because there is no greater love than self-love.

The need for validation from other people, be it your best friends, parents or even romantic partners, can drive people, especially the youth, to become what others want them to be instead of blossoming and flourishing in their own skin and lives.

Simelane’s a free spirit who for a long time struggled with her freckles but has now learned to embrace them.
“I’m fortunate that I’ve never actually been bullied but I have had a few incidents where some people made some hurtful comments about my freckles. My biggest struggle with having freckles was that I just couldn’t control them because they are everywhere!” she exclaimed.

Diversity

As a result of the sudden necessity for diversity among models in the world of beauty, many people with different qualities or facial features, some of which were previously a no-no in the modelling world, are now being embraced and encouraged to join the modelling industry.

A usual, conventional look does not cut it anymore as more and more designers are avoiding models with ‘common’ faces.
The whole purpose of fashion modelling is to stand out, so that, one looks at the model and continues looking at them, which in turn means the designers’ clothes are looked at more.

Although Sihle is in no way preparing to venture into modelling, she admits that she would definitely be open to doing it because of the recent change and how the world of modelling has begun to accept and embrace people who have different features from the majority of humanity.

“I am happy that more girls are becoming more confident in their own skin and embracing their differences and being unapologetic about them, it is so refreshing,” said Simelane.
The young beauty said she has accepted the fact that freckles, have always, and will always be a part of who she is.

Positive

“They are my identity, I get a lot of positive comments from people about my freckles and I’ve accepted that I will always be the girl with freckles,” said Sihle.
This just goes to show that once you accept yourself just the way you are without any pre-set conditions, nothing and no one can stop you.
In a world where we are constantly fed with one particular form of beauty, people, especially young girls are encouraged to remember that we are all beautiful; we are just different types of beautiful.
