MBABANE – Touted as South Africa’s foremost classical music competition, local opera singer Thando Zwane will be competing for the grand prize of E70 000.

Fresh from the memorable ‘The SRat Pack’s’ debut recital which was held at Liberty Centre in Manzini a week ago, his second ever concert on Eswatini soil, he has qualified for South Africa’s premier opera singing competition, the ATKV National Classical Vocal Competition. Zwane is well known as the soloist for His Majesty’s Correctional Services Choir which has won numerous competitions.
Zwane is the first ever singer from the kingdom to qualify for the opera competition.

The event is set to take place on September 7, 2018 at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parrow, Cape Town. The ATKV National Classical Vocal was founded a decade ago on the sole premise of identifying and mentoring Africa’s finest young voices towards sound competence on the world’s biggest opera stages. This is done through a round of extensive country wide auditions.

The competition will see Zwane compete against four of South Africa’s finest young voices including Nombulelo Yende who sings soprano, Bongani Kubheka who sings baritone, Pretty Yende who sings soprano and Luvuyo Mbundu on baritone.  The total prize money for the top three honours totals more than E150 000.

When asked how he qualified to take part in the competition, he said he auditioned in Pretoria, South Africa as the competition pits Africa’s finest young singers against each other.

These auditions take place across the continent which sees them adjudicated by a team of some of Africa’s leading music and voice teachers led by the competition Founder and Director, Ilse Schurmann. All African nationalities are eligible to enter.

The prizes include a third prize worth E20 000, second prize E35 000 and first prize E70 000. If it happens that Zwane wins, according to Schurmann he will have the opportunity to join a pool of singers who have gone on to establish themselves, as some of the industry’s finest out of Africa.
