MBABANE – Mbaqanga music legend Mshikishi Mndzebele is getting more recognition in our neighbouring country in his old age.

Mshikishi’s song titled ‘Tinkhundla’ has been receiving massive airplay in South Africa’s radio stations. As the year wraps up and radio stations are compiling their polls for most played songs, Mshikishi made it to the Top ‘Most Played Song of the year’ chart in the Ligwalagwala FM charts. The charts do not categorise positions in numbers but releases a list of 20 of the most played songs in 2017.

Topped

It is notable though that the artist appears at number four in the list, topped by SA’s Phuzukhemisi who is first on the list. The radio station based in Mpumalanga boosts a listenership of over two million a day. The chart toppers of 2017 were announced last Monday during the ‘Goodbye 2017’ exclusive show. Speaking on making it into the Ligwalagwala chart, Mndzebele said he was excited, especially because it happened at a time when he had reached his retirement age.   “God is really good. It is a dream come true to actually be on an international chart after 29 years in music.  I have always wished to be recognised as one of the big artists and being in the Ligwalagwala FM charts is the highlight of my career.” He said it all started with Ukhozi FM who had the song in their Top 20 Weekly Chart in August. He further noted that this was the very time he even made it into a radio chart, as even locally he has never been given such recognition. He thanked all the fans who called in to request his song during radio call-in shows, as that boosted the number of times it received airplay.

Lyrics

The song is contained in Mshikishi’s latest album titled ‘Overtime’. The lyrics talk about the beauty of the country’s governing system ‘Tinkhundla’. The deep Mbaqanga sound with its guitar and drum beats being the most dominant; make it the perfect song for Mbaqanga and Maskandi music lovers. The album is already available in all music outlets in the country and according to Mndzebele, it has been selling well. “The new technology of downloads makes it hard to sell CD copies but this album has proved to be my best work yet. I am grateful for the support,” added Mndzebele. It has recently hit the SA music selling outlets as he only started distributing it in October.
