MANZINI – True friends keep the memory of the deceased alive.

Indibano Jazz Club hosted a serene and musical send-off for their deceased friend and partner in music, Michael Mabaso, last Saturday at The Place in Manzini. The venue of the event was motivated by the fact that The Place has become the home of jazz music in Swaziland and they have hosted many jazz sessions, including the popular Indibano Jazz meet Ol’Skool Sessions. The concept of the musical memorial was to fundraise funds for Mabaso’s family, and enjoy jazz sounds in the same breathe. The event was embraced over 100 jazz Mabaso’s friends and family, jazz music lovers and The Place patrons. The attendees were serenaded by Indibano jazz collectors Mbusi Motsa who played contemporary jazz and Sibongiseni Mamba who dished out afro-soul inspired sounds. The day though, started slowly in the afternoon, where attendees were enjoying the music that was being fed to them. As the night progressed, more jazz fans arrived in the venue and they were treated to a performance by vocalist Lindelwa Vilakati and the iconic Mbongiseni ‘Bholoja’ Ngubane, who are close affiliates with Indibano Jazz Club.

Vilakati’s performances heated up the night and got the attendees dancing and marvelling to her new unfolding talent while Bholoja’s performance, as per the usual, sent many to a spiritual trance.  Mabaso was described as a man who was one of the many friends of Indibano, who never missed the club’s events. He was also instrumental in some, he added. Mamba invited all jazz lovers to come and experience one of the best sessions of 2017. Not only was Mabaso a musical man but he had a soft spot for tourism such that he facilitated some of the travelling arrangements on behalf of Indibano Jazz Club. Indibano’s Sibongiseni Mamba appreciated the warm embrace that the event was given by many.
“This is a very rare event, and as Michael’s friends, we are extremely humbled to join hands with all these wonderful friends to celebrate the life of our friend and brother. Michael had many rare qualities as an individual, which explains the kind of event organised in his honour,” said Mamba. One of the recognised guests was Mabaso’s brother, Pat Mabaso, who gloated on the warm gesture that his brother’s friends in music had hosted for his brother. Like his brother, Pat was also into jazz music and was in the tourism industry.
