MBABANE – The coined hashtag for the MTN- SWAMA awards campaign ‘loyal to local’ was in its full manifestation as Skeel recorded a full house at the Swaziland Theatre Club on Friday.

Sakhile Simelane, stage name Skeel, exceeded the expectations of those in attendance with a great production, a thrilling line-up and a sublime performance. The MCs of the evening were Nana Sambo and comedian Mdura. They kept the crowd entertained with their bantering.
The programme truly paid tribute to the arts as it consisted of vocal artists, poets and rappers. Opening the show was poet Alwandze who set the bar, and the artists who came after him; Trumpet and Tezwe, Silent Writer had people on their feet with his vernacular poem, Ntobie, Moyanic who also left a lasting impression on the crowd as they continuously screamed ‘shuuu’, Switch and Calliber maintained the momentum.

The MTNSWAMA nominated artist came onto the stage at 9.10pm with a monologue which quickly became interactive with the audience.
“As I walk on by, I hear them say there goes that Jesus freak, but I pay them no mind because I’d rather hear Jesus speak. I have the Bible as my lyrics, all I need is a Jesus beat,” he recited as the crowd shouted ‘Amen’. His set also brought together P1.7, a Gospel hip hop movement which takes its name from Proverbs 1 chapter 7, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge”.

The group consists of Calliber, XO Hip Hop Apostle, Pyramid and the man of the moment, Skeel.
True to the artist’s promise before the show, he said the experience would be a moving, blending, progressing and emotive journey of sound. Based on the quality of the music that was dished for the audience, he honoured his promise. He had a backing band which consisted of Andile ‘Cheese boy’ Gamedze (Musical Director / Drummer) and on Bass and Bass Synth was Nkhosiyinhle Mamba. The duo was simply on fire, the intrinsic sounds that were produced were amazing to behold. The musical director alluded to the fact that their delivery was due to the extensive preparation and risks they took with the sounds by exploring new realms. “Passion is the only thing that drives us, also working with Skeel is always such a pleasure.”

The high energy show saw the artist perform for one hour and 15 minutes. Immediately after his monologue, the band played a progressive and rhythmic intro, it was as if they are ushering another level of Skeel’s performance. The artist then performed ‘My music’ followed by ‘Commissioned’. The artist then rendered ‘Sitelingi’, a song which basically speaks to the fact that in a world filled with so many people, refuse to conform or compare yourself. “FYI, I am the best me I can be, being myself is plan A and not plan B, yati, angitiboni ngiba nguwe anytime and that is why I gotta be me every time.”
Before he went on to perform the next track, he took time to testify that he had been saved for the past five years.
