MBABANE – For the first time in the history of beauty pageants in the country, the girl to be crowned as Miss Swaziland will be given an option to decide if she wants to participate in the upcoming Umhlanga (Reed)  Dance ceremony or not.

This is part of the pageant’s rules and regulations that have been given to the top 10 finalists through a framework document from Pageant SD.
The finalists of the pageant were unveiled two weeks ago.

According to Pageant Swaziland’s framework, which the Entertainment Desk has in its possession, the queen will have the option of whether she wants to participate in the Umhlanga ceremony.

In the past, Miss Swaziland was expected to attend the Umhlanga ceremony as it was compulsory.
This also applies to Miss Teen Swaziland who has also been given the option to decide whether she wants to attend the ceremony or not.
However, in the same framework it states that Miss Cultural Heritage and Miss Tourism are compelled to attend the ceremony  and all cultural activities.

In the past, all pageant winners and their princesses were expected to attend all cultural activities, especially those that are recognised by the Swaziland National Council of Arts and Culture (SNCAC).

In most cases, the queens and their finalists attended the cultural activities, which include the Umhlanga ceremony from the first until the last day of the event.

Asked about the new rules that are in the framework, Stanley Dlamini made it clear that all the beauty queens are expected to attend all cultural activities in the country without fail.
“This is one of the conditions that are compulsory in all pageants. There is no way the queens can be given an option as they have to know their culture,” he said.
