MBABANE – Old Mutual has pumped in E1 100 000 for this year’s Old Mutual Festival.
Old Mutual also put up E100 000 for the champions of this year’s festival.

This year, the festival will be marking its 38th year and the price tag has seen a bit of increment.
The festival, which is one of the biggest choral music events in the Southern African Region, starts on August 16 and will continue until October leading to the finale which is slated for December.

Normally the eliminations are held at Esibayeni Lodge and the finals are normally held in Durban or Johannesburg.
Locally the eliminations will be held on August 16. Winners during the eliminations then compete during the finals.
Announcing this year’s sponsorship package was Old Mutual Sponsorship Manager Bandile Mngoma.

“The search is on for Southern Africa’s finest choral voices. Voices that soar, lift, inspire and unite. With the prize money totalling more than E1 100 000, the sub-continent’s oldest, biggest and most prestigious choral music competition has become hotly contested,” he said.

Attracting

Mngoma said the number of participating choirs was growing each and every year and the festival was attracting the best of the best.
Former participants whose choral music excellence has taken them to international stages include Afro Tenors, Pretty Yende and Phumeza Matshikiza.

He said choirs that want to take part in the festival, especially those that are new have until April 30 to audition.
He said for choirs to be considered in this year’s competition, they are required to record two pieces, one Western and one African. One piece can be sung acapella and the other accompanied.
